Scope and content
Series consists of photographs relating to career, personal life and family of Dr. Daniel G. Hill, and are of interest to researchers in the area of Black history in Canada, human rights, race relations, native studies and the development of multiculturalism. Series includes photographs of individuals, groups, places, and events concerning the history of blacks in Ontario. Included are photos from Windsor and Amherstburg; Wilberforce and London; Toronto; St. Catharines and Niagara Falls; the Oro-Collingwood area; Chatham and Dresden; Hamilton; Buxton; material concerning slavery and the underground railway; Mr. and Mrs. Fleming; Harry Gairey; the opening and views of the 1963 Ontario Black History Exhibit, Toronto. Series also includes personal and family related material of career and awards related photographs of Daniel G. Hill as an Ombudsman of Ontario (1984) and the first Director of the Ontario Human Rights Commission; receiving Honourary Doctorate degrees from St. Thomas University and University of Toronto (1986 and 2000); being recognized for his work at the Ontario Human Rights Commission (1980s); and participating in the inauguration of Daniel G. Hill Scholarship Fund (1994) and the launch of the Anti-Racism, Multiculturalism and Native Issues Centre (1995) at the Faculty of Social Work, University of Toronto. Also included are photographs of singer and composer Dan Hill, including his publicity and childhood photos with parents Daniel and Donna Hill; and family and friends of Daniel G. Hill, including material on Martin, Metoyer, Hampton/Chetty, Calbert (Marsh), and Duryee/Bender families.
