Fonds consists of a diary kept by T.R.B. Smith for the period 6 June to 18 November 1879, while working for the Canadian Pacific Railway in the Prince Albert region, which also contains a Cree and English dictionary.

Biography / Administrative history

Thomas Rhys Brock Smith, the son of the railway engineer Marcus Smith, was born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1857. Smith became a surveyor and worked on the Canadian Pacific Railway c.1879-1885. In 1891 he married Mayne E. Thompson in New York. Four years later he moved to Cos Cob, north of New York City, to work on various railway projects and to supervise construction projects. Smith died at Cos Cob after a long illness in 1929.
