Biography / Administrative history
The Woodward family lived and farmed in the area of St. Williams, Norfolk County, Ontario in the 1880's. Edwin Woodward embarked from St. Williams on a homesteading expedition to the North West Territories in the spring of 1882. He travelled through the United States in order to reach Winnipeg, where he joined his brother Demetrius (known as "Nimrod" or "Nim"), who had preceded him. Together they took the CPR to the end-of-steel (Brandon) and then travelled by ox-cart to the Qu'Appelle/Pile-of-Bones Creek (Regina) region. A younger brother, Alfred, followed them, while another, A.H. (Hallum) Woodward, remained in St. Williams.
The Woodward brothers attempted to establish a homestead near Pile-of-Bones Creek, but by the arrival of cold weather they had not been able to build a serviceable house. Edwin and Demetrius returned to St. Williams in the fall of 1882. Demetrius later rejoined Alfred and settled with his family in the North West Territories; Edwin Woodward, however, remained in St. Williams and did not return to the North West.
