The fonds consists of views in and around Montreal, Quebec City, Saguenay, activities, personnel and facilities of firms such as Canadian Vickers Ltd, Canada Steamship Lines, Steinberg's Ltd, Montreal, Quebec, as well as other activities, events, and personalities who commissioned the studio to complete work for them. There are also 33 souvenir view cards displaying interior and exterior views of Manoir Richelieu,Tadoussac (formerly Murray Bay), Saguenay, Cape Trinity and miscellaneous habitants.

Samuel J. Hayward was born in United Kingdom, date unknown. He did a lot of work for advertising and photo-engraving firms. In the early nineteen twenties Samuel J. Hayward was official photographer for Canada Steamshp Lines and created many views of their steamships, Manoir Richelieu, and the Tadoussac Hotel.He also photographed views and items of interest around the mouth of the Saguenay River, exterior and interior views of the Chateau Frontenac which were taken for the architect Edward Maxwell and other buildings in Quebec City and Montreal. There are a number of other architectural subjects in the collection, including construction progress and completed buildings for such firms as Ross & MacDonald, H.L. Fetherstonhaugh, Philip J. Turner, Darling & Pearson, A.T. Galt Durnford, Barott & Blackader, Ernest Cormier and others, as well as industrial work, Steinberg's Ltd, Canadian Vickers Ltd, etc. Mr. Hayward made several tours out West including photographs of the Rockies, Winnipeg and other cities. He also covered the Maritime Provinces. Norman Zucker bought Hayward Studios in Montreal in 1945. The National Archives acquired some 100,000 negatives in 1971. Samuel J. Hayward died in 1956 in Florida, USA. National Archives, photographers files.
