Portée et contenu
Immigrants who have come to Canada from many different countries have brought with them the legends and traditions of their own people to add rich threads of colour to the Canadian fabric. Most colourful of all the traditions are those that relate to the observance of Christmas. Netherlands immigrants in Canada still mark Sinterklaas Day on December 5th, with a visit from good Saint Nicholas who travels on a white horse accompanied by his servant, Black Peter. The children put out their wooden shoes on the eve of Sinterklaas Day, filled with hay and a carrot for Saint Nicholas' horse. In return the good saint brings to the children if they have been good; but if they have been bad, Black Peter is there to chastise them with the rod he carries. December 25 is celebrated as a religious event, with Christmas trees alight with candles, and marzipan and fine pastries for all to eat.
