Biographie / Histoire administrative

John Frazer, physician, born in Ayrshire, Scotland in 1806, was the son of William Frazer and his second wife Abigail Stewart. John Frazer graduated from the Glasgow College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1825, and practised medicine in Doune and Ayr for twelve years before he immigrated to Canada.

In 1837 Frazer left Scotland, partly in disgust at a Liberal election defeat, and travelled by way of New York to Welland County, Upper Canada. Here he practised medicine and was an active politician. Frazer was Reeve for Pelham Township from at least 1849 to 1856, first warden of the new County of Welland in 1856, and member of the Legislative Assembly for Welland, 1854-1857. John Frazer died at Fonthill in 1882.
