Note sur le classement
The distinction between the records found in this series and those found elsewhere in this fonds in the four colony-specific series for the offices of the Lieutenant Governors of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island, and the Governor of British Columbia and Vancouver Island, may not initially be apparent. The records found in this series are despatches from the Lieutenant Governors of the various colonies to the Governor-in-Chief and, as such, are records that came into, and were maintained in, the office of the Governor-in-Chief organically as part of the business flow of communication of that office. The records in the four colony-specific series for the offices of the Lieutenant Governors of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island, and the Governor of British Columbia and Vancouver Island, on the other hand, were inherited as historical collections from defunct colonies by the Office of the Governor General of the Dominion of Canada. They came into the custody of the Office of the Governor General of the Dominion of Canada at different times and under different circumstances.
