Portée et contenu

Sub-series consists of indexed registers recording all documents except despatches submitted to the Privy Council. These registers and indexes serve as a finding aid for the minutes, annexes and reports sub-series (RG-A-1-a), Records sub-series (RG2-A-1-b) and Dormants sub-series (RG2-A-1-c). In addition to registry number, each entry indicates which minister made the submission, the subject, dates of receipt, consideration and approval and the disposition of the relevant papers. A single numerical sequence was used until 1871 when a new numerical sequence started at the beginning of each year thereafter. An alphabetical index for each year identifies the relevant Order in Council number in the register. The date of approval may then be identified. The correct reference to an order includes minutes, annexes and reports sub-series (RG-A-1-a) and the volume number. It is necessary to obtain a volume number through the use of a conversion list found with the finding aids to order the material. It should be noted that in some cases orders in council do not have an approval date. These circumstances are described in the Dormants sub-series (RG2-A-1-c).
