Biographie / Histoire administrative

The "old" Northern Superintendency was officially established in 1845, and was comprised of Manitoulin Island, Cockburn Island, and reserves on the north shore of Lakes Superior and Huron, and on Georgian Bay (Fort William, Garden River, Parry Sound). This superintendency was based at Manitowaning, on Manitoulin Island. It was dissolved on 21 October 1873 (o/c 1359) when a reorganization took place which resulted in three divisions: Northern Superintendency Division 1; Northern Superintendency Division 2; and Northern Superintendency Division 3. A Superintendent was appointed to administer, from an office at the town of Manitowaning, the bands designated as the responsibility of the Northern Superintendency, Division 1 (i.e. those bands located on Manitoulin and Cockburn Islands, and on the shores of Georgian Bay/Lake Huron between Maganettawan and Thessalon River).
