Biographie / Histoire administrative

The Six Nations Superintendency was established in the 1890s and was comprised of the Six Nations reserves on the Grand River. It is unclear when the transition was made from the use of the name Grand River Superintendency to the Six Nations Superintendency, but it was complete by 1937, when the o/c transferring the Mississaugas of the Credit was passed. The Superintendency was responsible for: the Six Nations of the Grand River (?-1958?), and the Mississaugas of the Credit (1937?-1958?) The predecessor agency, the Grand River Superintendency was established ca. 1 July 1845. It is unclear when the name "Six Nations Superintendency" came into use for this office. The Six Nations Superintendency became the Six Nations Agency when the new name was confirmed in 1958 (RG 10, vol. 8212, file 401/1-1).
