Series consists of records created and/or maintained by the office of the Chief Engineer. The series includes unnumbered correspondence and documents, indexes, records relating to the Georgian Bay Ship Canal, letterbooks of the Chief Engineer and the Superintending Engineer of the Ottawa River Works, returns and reports, and records of the District Engineer's Office, Pacific Region. Series also consists of records relating to engineering design and construction of bridges, railways and other structural engineering projects, surveys, roads, marine structures and equipment as well as the maintenance and improvement of navigable waters.

Biographie / Histoire administrative
In 1868 the Board of Railway Commissioners had been appointed and the surveys begun for the Intercolonial Railway. Sir Sandford Fleming was appointed Chief Engineer in 1869 and the actual construction was begun. Control of the railway was, however, vested in the Department of Public Works in 1874 (37 Vict.
