Portée et contenu
Series consists of records maintained in the Deputy Minister's Office registry system which was first introduced in 1936 with the creation of the Department of Mines and Resources. A number of former Department of the Interior branches; Mines and Geology, Immigration, Lands, Parks and Forests, Surveys and Engineering, and Indian Affairs, were consolidated into one administrative unit reporting to the Deputy Minister. Many of these functions shifted to new departments as they were created and evolved. This also affected the mixture of subjects dealt with at the level of the Deputy Minister. In order to control this wide range of information a central registry system was introduced for Deputy Minister records. It served as the main storehouse for issues generated by a succession of departments from Mines and Resources, Resources and Development, Northern Affairs and National Resources, Indian Affairs and Northern Development. The system was in use until 1971. The records from this Deputy Minister's Office registry system are arranged into a large registry file sub-series and two smaller sub-series containing "secret" registry files and special Indian Affairs files.
