Series consists of correspondence on subjects of interest to Canadian Government departments. When Sir Alexander Galt assumed the position of High Commissioner in 1880 he was not fulfilling a diplomatic role. His responsibility was to conduct the business of the Canadian Government in London. This meant all manner of government activity which would concern Canada, including defence arrangements, trade, finance, immigration, justice, shipping, etc. He was assisted in this work by representatives of various Canadian Government departments. The material is arranged according to the government department concerned, although it is without file indicators. There are records in this series for the following Canadian government departments: Agriculture, Finance, Inland Revenue, Interior, Justice, Marine & Fisheries, Militia & Defence, North West Mounted Police, Post Office, the Privy Council Office, Public Works, Railways & Canals, Secretary of State, and Trade and Commerce. There is also correspondence with the British War Office.
