Biographie / Histoire administrative
Under the terms of the 1918 Statistics Act, the Dominion Statistician was required, under the direction of the Minister to whom s/he reported, to `supervise and control' the Dominion Bureau of Statistics. S/he was to be the Minister's representative in statistical negotiations with the provinces, and as per Order-in-Council 2503 (12 October 1918) and 1092 (20 May 1920), had a great deal of authority with regards to statistical matters in other departments. The 1948 Statistics Act, added the requirement to advise on all matters pertaining to statistical policy, to confer with government departments to that end and arrange with other government departments the collection, classification and publication of statistics. On 25 January 1965, Order-in-Council 1965-29 declared the Bureau, for legal and administrative purposes, to be a department of the federal government, with the Dominion Statistician as its deputy head. In 1971, a new Statistics Act was passed, which changed the name of the organization to `Statistics Canada' and, subsequently, of the departmental head to `Chief Statistician of Canada'.
