Portée et contenu

Series consists of reports, correspondence and memoranda concerning illegal immigration in general, criminal organizations, fraudulent travel documents, and cooperation with law enforcement agencies, other government departments, private organizations, and businesses. These files are from 200, 300, 400 and 700 blocks of a special file series prefixed by "IH". They are therefore not a part of Employment and Immigration's central registry file system. All RCMP "Secret" correspondence, specific RCMP reports, and all "Top Secret" documents have been removed from files by the Intelligence Division before transfer to the National Archives and destroyed.

Biographie / Histoire administrative

The Intelligence Division of Employment and Immigration Canada collects information and provides advice and support on security related matters to immigration agents. This division relies heavily on information gathered by the RCMP, as well as by other Canadian provincial and municipal police forces, Interpol, and police forces and intelligence sources in other countries. In 1984 the division was under the jurisdiction of the Program and Liaison Directorate, Enforcement Branch. RG76 General Inventory

Immigration intelligence files are also found among the records of the regional offices. For instance, the series for the Nova Scotia Regional Office (MIKAN 157229) in the Canada Employment and Immigration Commission sous-fonds, contains ca. 2.1 m of unprocessed immigration intelligence files maintained in the IH 600 block by Dartmouth or Halifax offices, 1981-1988 (see BAN 1998-00159-8 and 1998-00184-9). The series for the Nova Scotia Regional Office (MIKAN 210799) in the Human Resources Development Canada fonds, also contains a linked accession with immigration intelligence files from that regional office (see BAN 2003-00996-5).
