Series consists of a group of records transferred from the Department of External Affairs. Though the Board was independent, the Department of External Affairs was closely involved with its work. These records cover various operational subjects, such as the defence of Newfoundland, the Alaska Highway, the CANOL Project, and other related defence subjects.

The Permanent Joint Board of Defence is a Canadian-American Advisory Board that was established on August 18, 1940. It consists of two national sections, each composed of a chairman, and representatives from both the armed forces and the foreign service.
