Series consists of records created by the International Women's Year Secretariat office while administering the national programme. The series also contains records created by the provinces while organizing and holding regional conferences. Records contain documentation of the preparation and consultations for the conference.

Biographie / Histoire administrative

The International Women's Year Secretariat was established by the Canadian government as the organization responsible for the development, implementation and administration of a national programme for International Women's Year. This programme was to focus on increasing Canadians' awareness of the status of women and was to contain two major components: a national awareness programme to encourage attitudinal change, a national conference and a series of four regional conferences (later replaced by a selection of provincial / territorial programmes). The Secretariate of 14 staff years for the fiscal years 1974-1976 was set up within the Privy Council Office and reported to the Co-ordinator, Status of Women and the Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, the Honourable Marc Lalonde. The Secretariat's programme implementaion plan was drafted in 1973 by the federal Interdepartmental Committee on the Status of Women.
