Series consists of correspondence received in the office of the Lieutenant Governor, Upper Canada, concerning Indian Affairs. The records cover the following periods during which the administration of Indian Affairs was under civil control: 1796-1816, 1829-1830, 1841-1843. The records of the Lieutenant Governor were maintained by his Civil and Military Secretaries. The contents of volumes 6-7 were extracted from the Civil Secretary's Correspondence (now RG7-G-20) sometime during the 1870's.

In 1796, Royal Instructions were issued to the Lieutenant Governors of Upper Canada, investing them with administrative authority over Indian Affairs in Upper Canada and, thus, making the Superintendent of Indian Affairs and the various officers of the Indian Department answerable to the Lieutenant Governor in the Province. By General Order of 13 May 1816, Indian Affairs in Upper Canada was placed under the control of the Commander of the Forces. By General Order of 13 April 1830, Indian Affairs in Upper Canada were placed once again under control of the Lieutenant Governor. With the Union of the Canadas of 1841, administrative responsibility for Indian Affairs in the United Province of Canada was placed under the authority of the Governor-General. RG10 General Inventory
