Biographie / Histoire administrative
The prolonged absence of Sir John Johnson from the country made it necessary, in 1794, to create the office of Deputy Superintendent General. Colonel Alexander McKee was appointed to the position on 26 December 1794, with authority to take charge of the Department in the absence of the Superintendent General. William Claus was appointed to the position in 1800, following McKee's death, and served until his own death in 1826. Major-General H. C. Darling (Military Secretary to the Governor General) succeeded to the position under the authority of a General Order of 1 December 1826, and occupied the post until 1828. RG10 General Inventory
