Series consists of records created and maintained in the Western Superintendency. The series includes the correspondence of various superintendents and resident agents, letterbooks, accounts, general operational records, and miscellaneous land records.

Biographie / Histoire administrative

The report of the Bagot Commission suggested the creation of a district encompassing all tribes in Upper Canada other than those previously administered by the Superintendent General of Indian Affairs. The resulting administrative district, established ca.1 July 1845 was the Western Superintendency. This superintendency was comprised of the Walpole Island, St. Clair, Kettle and Stoney Point, Pelee Island, Amherstburg and the Moravian and Caradoc (Muncey) Reserves and was responsible for the following Bands: Caradoc (1845-1873); Chippewas of Kettle and Stony Point (1845-1873); Chippewas of Sarnia (1845-1873); Chippewas of the Thames (1845-1873); Chippewas of Walpole Island (1845-1873); Mississaugas of the Credit (1845-1873) Moravian of the Thames (1845-1873); Munceys of the Thames (1845-1873); Oneidas of the Thames (1845-1873); and Pottawattamies of Walpole Island (1845-1873). The successor agencies were the Western Superintendency Division 1 and Western Superintendency Division 2, both established 31 July 1873 (o/c 959). On 18 August 1883 (o/c 1793) the Western Superintendency Division 1 became the Sarnia Agency and the Walpole Island Agency. The Western Superintendency Division 2 later became the Caradoc Agency.
