Biographie / Histoire administrative

The Kwawkewlth Agency in British Columbia, sometimes referred to as the Alert Bay Agency, was established by Order-in-Council, 3 April, 1881. The agency was located at the following sites: Beaver Harbour, BC (1882-1883); Alert Bay, BC (1883-1887); Fort Rupert, BC (1887-1889); Cape Mudge, BC (1897-1901); and Alert Bay, BC (1903-1969). The agents responsible for Kwawkewlth were: George Blenkensop (1881-1886); R.H. Pidcock (1887-1901); G.W. DeBeck (1902-1905); W.M. Halliday (1906-1932); E.G. Newnham (1932-1934) [Acting]; M.S. Todd (1934-1947); J.C. Letcher (1947-1948); M.S. Todd (1948-1952); C.H. Dickie (1952); J. Mundreon (1953); J.A. Findlay (1953-1962); A.C. Roach (1962-1965); and A.E. Fry (1966-1969). The Kwawkewlth Agency merged with some Bands from the West Coast Agency and became part of the newly-created North Island District office in 1970.
