Biographie / Histoire administrative

Although the order-in-council creating the Nipissing Agency out of the former Parry Sound Superintendency in Ontario was passed on 23 February 1904, the appointment was retroactive to 1 February 1904. In addition, the order-in-council initially establishing this agency did not specify a particular name. When confusion arose in 1955 as to whether the agency was named either Sturgeon Falls (its headquarters) or Nipissing (a band in its jurisdiction), a search was made of the records, and "Nipissing Agency" was deemed to be the official name of the agency, as confirmed by Treasury Board minute 483,712. (RG 10, volume 8212, file 401/1-1). "Notes on the Dept of Indian Affairs and its Agencies etc" (p.26) indicates that three bands were transferred to this agency on 23 June 1938 by order in council, but the only order in council found describes the creation of the new agencies without reference to any bands. However, a 1955 list of bands and agencies does confirm that this took place at some time in the past (RG 10, volume 8212, file 401/1-1). The Tahgaiwini band changed its name to Wahnapitae in 1940. In 1967 Nipissing Agency was amalgamated with the Chapleau Agency and the Sault Ste. Marie Education District to form the Sudbury District.
