Biographie / Histoire administrative
Indian affairs in Nova Scotia between 1871 and 1942 were administered through a system of local agents. The common pattern was one in which the agent's responsibility included the entire Indian population of a county rather than designated bands and reserves. In 1942, the local administrative structure was reduced to two agencies, one for the mainland population (Shubenacadie) and one for Cape Breton (Eskasoni). In 1970 the Shubenacadie Agency was responsible for the following Bands: Shubenacadie, Truro, Pictou, Annapolis Valley, Bear River, Afton, and Acadia. The Shubenacadie and the Eskansoni Agencies merged to form the Nova Scotia District office effective 1 July 1971. Regional Administrative Histories, 1958-1990, (Bands, Agencies, Districts). Unpublished draft in the possession of the RG10 archivist, prepared by Peter Kiefl et al.
