Biographie / Histoire administrative
A local agent of the colonial Indian Department had served at Six Nations/Grand River Superintendency since the late 18th century. Following Confederation, the Grand River Superintendency continued as the administrative unit responsible for the Six Nations. It is unclear when the transition was made from the use of the term Grand River Superintendency to Six Nations Superintendency, and from that to Six Nations Agency. The Six Nations Agency became a part of the Brantford District on 5 October 1969. During the period documented by the records in this series, the Grand River Superintendency was also responsible for the Mississaugas of New Credit, a band which had come to live with the Six Nations people in the late 1840s. A separate agency for the Mississaugas of New Credit was established only in 1888. Finding aid 10-157: Guide to Indian Affairs Field Office Organization in Ontario, 1845-1990.
