Portée et contenu

Series consists of two bound ledgers completed by Indian Agents, each entitled, "Book Containing Names of Chiefs and Minor Chiefs in Canada". The first ledger is dated 1894, the second ledger is dated 1895. A table of contents was created for each volume by Indian Affairs and is attached to the inside cover of each ledger. Within each book pages are divided by province and, in the case of Manitoba and the Northwest Territories, further sub-divided by Treaty number. Information contained in the ledgers includes: the Band name, English and Indian names of each Chief, rank (1st or 2nd Chief, or Headman), age, authority for and date of appointment of the Chief (elected or appointed) and remarks on the Chief's character. A brief note on page 97, ledger one is signed by Hayter Reed, Indian Commissioner. A computer disk attached by Indian Affairs is located inside the front cover of the first ledger. It was created by the Department for its own use when doing Entitlement Research. Information on the disk contains all but the "character" comments from the ledgers.
