Biographie / Histoire administrative
The Montréal Immigration Agency was established by the pre-Confederation government of the Province of Canada. Most immigrants coming to Canada from Europe in the 19th century, who were officially recorded as such by the government, landed at either Québec City or (after 1880) Halifax. This "official" landing was for the purposes of federal quarantine and medical inspection. After inspection, many of the immigrant ships went on to Montreal or other seaports to land their passengers. Montréal was also a central point for immigrant reception and administration because of the large number of immigrants who sailed into such American ports as Portland and New York City, and entered Canada by land through Montreal.
