Portée et contenu
The file comprises the letter book of Mather Byles Almon of Halifax, Nova Scotia. It contains copies of his outgoing correspondence relating to his work as the agent for the Pelican Life Insurance Company in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Bermuda; work as an agent for the General Mining Association; partnership with the merchant firm Belcher, Binney, & Co.; and business as an independent commission merchant. The letters provide details of commercial life in Halifax in the 1820s and 1830s, and shed light on the triangle trade between North America, Great Britain and the West Indies involving flour, pitch pine boards, staves, and shingles, and other commodities. Some of his business associates and correspondents include Thomas Parke, Andrew Belcher, Richard Smith, Rupert J. Cochran, Edward Lyde, and Henry George Barclay, among others.
