Under the 'Statistics Act', Statistics Canada is required to conduct a census of the entire Canadian population every 5 years. The 1986 endeavour was launched on 3 June, with three questions related to aboriginal status, disability (sent to one in five households) and specialization of education added to the questionnaire. When the first results were released in April 1987, the population of Canada had risen to 25 354 064, with these individuals living in over 9 million households.
Accession consists of various records created during the 1986 census endeavour, including files related to specific staff hired for different positions and files describing those positions, communications material, minutes from census and communications meetings, and various reports. Also included are files related to individuals that provided direct responses and refusals to the 1986 census.
Accession also consists of moving images and sound recordings related to public relations for the 1986 Census. Included are television commercials and instructional material in both English and French.
