CANADA; in pencil, verso, c.: Arthur Field's Place / Breaking Prairie / Amongst the Bluffs on the Pairie [sic] about 5 miles E by N of Broadview, C.P.R. NorthWest Territory, Canada / The Fire has been through - / Note - The distant Hills anthe [?] W ... Hills - very Blue - Give the wh ... thi ... a wash of / Anreolin [?] - shortish ... separated grass all over - ... scrub in foreg[?]d. / Plenty of Buffalo Birds - i.e. black birds - follow plough. A Gopher might be in foreground / or perhaps a Nitchi (Indian, looking on) - For color of oxen & details of breaking [?] Plough - see sketch in book / The yellow flowers are wild Vitches [?] - later some ... wild roses, very red. / This same scenery prevails in patches all over the Prairies for 800 miles N & S of C.P.R. on the / Weid [?] hills it is thicker Bluff (ie wood) all poplar & wild cherry bushes here, their, their are a few oaks, scrubby / [sic] are a few oaks, scrubby / here are to be found commonly,Moose, Blacktiled deer & numbers of Elk. (?) Waf ... . / Wolves & Bears. Amongst these Bluffs, like this sketch, on the bare places are very / numerous holes, the dirt thrown out, on these sit Prairie Dogs & Gophers. / any number of flowers & ... color'd plant / see dried specimen; b.: Arthur's Shanty.
