Portée et contenu
In almost five years with the Steel Company of Canada in Hamilton, Mr. Staalduinen worked his way to $2.25 per hour as a crane operator. While employed full time, he made an attempt as pig raising, in partnership with a friend. After 18 months of effort, the enterprise failed. Not the least bit discouraged, Mr. Van Staalduinen began growing vegetables on the 14 acres of land he had purchased in 1952 in Burlington, Ont. with his savings and those of his wife, Patricia, whom he met and married in Canada. He left the Steel Company in 1955 and the following year began growing flowers. Since, he has added two rooms to his house and built eight greenhouses in addition to 23,000 sq. ft. of hot beds. Cornelis Van Staalduinen has two trucks, a heavy duty tractor and loader, spraying equipment, roto-tiller and a heating and irrigation system which he has installed. He has three full-time employees on his staff and sometimes as many as seven part-time workers. As a businessman in Canada, Mr. Van Staalduinen is free to decide what to grow and to price his products according to demand. Mr. Van Staalduinen, born in Naaldwyk, Holland, is now a Canadian citizen. He and his wife, Canadian-born to Dutch parents, have two children, Helen 8 years and Corina 10 months.
