Portée et contenu
The records in this series were created and maintained by George Norman Jones in his personal office space during the course of his career in the RCMP. The records contain copies of RCMP correspondence, personal letters, notes, reports, bulk files, crutch files, drafts of speeches, briefs, newspaper clippings and published documents relating to this member's service and career in the RCMP from 1942 until his retirement to pension in 1974. Much of the correspondence is related to Jones' duties as Chief Visa Control Officer stationed in Hong Kong in the mid 1960's. Files and correspondence pertain to the RCMP response to illegal Chinese immigration. The series contains numerous exchanges of correspondence between Jones and J.K. Abbott, Director, Inspection Division, Department of Citizenship and Immigration. Jones also corresponded with a number of officials in the Royal Hong Kong Police Department during the course of carrying out his duties as Chief Visa Control Officer. One set of documents describes the investigation of illegal Chinese immigration in 1910 by Detective Inspector Edward Foster of the Dominion Police. The files are not organized according to a file classification system but are grouped in folders under general headings. (It was a common practice during Mr Jones' career for officers to keep temporary or crutch files within their personal file system for the purpose of quick and ready access. Copies of RCMP correspondence contained within the file folders form part of Mr. Jones' crutch file system. Correspondence not intended for the official RCMP record is also contained within this file system).

Biographie / Histoire administrative
Following his engagement, George Norman Jones completed training at Depot Division. Within the series a number of handwritten notes, notebooks, course handouts and ledgers relate to this portion of his training and document police procedures and methodology during the 1940's. He was subsequently posted to K division (Alberta) and served on detachment duty until purchasing his discharge in 1944 to join the Royal Canadian Navy. He re-engaged with the RCMP in 1946 and was posted to HQ, Ottawa where he worked in the Identification Service, Preventive Service and as a CIB investigator. Jones, commissioned in 1960, was posted to Hong Kong in 1966 as Chief Visa Control Officer for a period of three years. A large portion of the material contained in the series relates to his work investigating illegal Chinese immigration. On his return to Ottawa he was appointed OIC of Criminal Investigation Branch at Headquarters, Ottawa. Promoted to the rank of Chief Superintendent in August, 1970, Jones was selected to organize the new Protective Policing Directorate and subsequently appointed as its first Director. He retired to pension in December, 1974.
