Portée et contenu
This series contains 351 photographs of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York (later King George V and Queen Mary) on their coast-to-coast royal tour of Canada between September 16th and October 21st, 1901. Although the tour officially commenced in Québec, the photographs in this series were taken by Topley after the couple arrived in Ottawa on September 20th. The couple were in Ottawa between September 20-24, where they were photographed at an official presentation of addresses on Parliament Hill, at the unveiling of the monument to Queen Victoria, at a garden party hosted at the Government House, running the timber slides, and finally, a visit to a lumber camp in Rockcliffe Park. Next, the couple and their entourage travelled through Western Canada from September 25-28, where they were photographed in Winnipeg, Regina, Moose Jaw and Calgary. Some highlights from these trips that were photographed by Topley include a presentation of addresses and visit to the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, and a review of Mounted Police and a pow-wow at Shaganappi Point in Calgary. They continued to journey through the mountains on September 29th, passing through Laggan on the way, and arrived in Vancouver on September 30th. Here, Topley photographed an Indian canoe race and other views of the city, including a view of an arch that had been erected to welcome the couple. The following day, the couple sailed to Victoria where they stayed at the Oak Bay Hotel. They returned to Vancouver on October 3rd, and began their return journey the following day. They stopped at Banff on the way back, where Topley took a number of scenic photographs. The royal couple arrived back in Ontario on October 10th, and toured the province until the 16th. They were photographed in Toronto, Guelph, Berlin (present-day Kitchener), Stratford, London, Hamilton, and Kingston. Next, the couple traveled to the Maritime Provinces, and were photographed both at St. John (New Brunswick) and Halifax, where they ended their tour on October 21st and sailed back home on the Ophir.
