Prior to 1972 the Department of National Health and Welfare maintained a separate division to do research and gather statistics on topics of interest to the Department. The Research and Statistics Division was itself divided; one section specialized in health topics and another in welfare topics. After 1972 the Research and Statistic Division was broken up and each branch of the Department began to do its own research and statistics work. The accession consists of records pertaining to health research and statistics. Material relating to welfare research is still retained by the Department. Topics covered in these files include medical care, health insurance, hospital insurance, disease and medical economics. A certain amount of the material collected here documents health research and statistics in countries other than Canada.
