Biographie / Histoire administrative
Canada and Norway established diplomatic relations on 9 February 1942. In October of 1942 Brigadier Georges Vanier was appointed the Canadian Government's Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Allied Governments in Exile in London. This included the government of Norway. This ended in December 1943 when Vanier left London to take up his post as the Canadian government's representative to the French Committee of Liberation in Algiers. From 20 December 1943 until the end of the war, Canada's relations with Norway were handled by a Chargé d'Affaires. After the liberation of Norway in the spring of 1945 and the return of the King to Oslo on 7 June 1945, Canada and Norway decided to post a permanent representatives in each other's country. John Doherty Kearney became Canada's Minister to Norway. The Canadian Mission to Norway began its operations on February 6, 1945 and the Commercial Secretary reached Oslo on May 7 of the same year. The post was raised from a legation to an embassy on 4 August 1955. RG25 General Inventory
