Biographie / Histoire administrative
An administration or administrative services branch has existed in the Department of National Health and Welfare (NHW) since 1945 and has, over the years, encompassed a variety of department-wide services such as: secretariat support, personnel, purchasing and supply, departmental libraries, legal services, information services, and research and statistics. In 1966, a major re-organization of the Administration Branch resulted in the creation of a Financial Administration directorate, the addition of Management (consultant) Services, and the evolution of Registry Services into Records Management. Several changes were made to the Administration Branch in the 1970s, including the creation of a Minister's Secretariat in 1970 to provide administrative support including parliamentary references and questions to the Office of the Minister, the establishment of Internal Audit as a separate division in 1974, and the creation of an Official Languages Directorate in 1977.
In August 1981, the Corporate Planning and Management Practices Directorate (CPMPD) was created, encompassing the Financial Administration Directorate, the Information (later Communications) Directorate, and Departmental Administrative Services (which added accommodation, security and central electronic data processing to its existing services). The Directorate was elevated to the Corporate Management Branch in 1983, and later took on responsibility for the Occupational Health and Safety program, the Access to Information and Privacy program, and Management Practices.
The Communications Directorate, along with Access to Information, became part of the new Policy, Communications and Information Branch in 1987.
