Item is a journal kept by Henry Connolly recording weather, arrivals, departures, with extensive commentary on Indian movements, hunting, and the conduct of the fur trade in James Bay.

Rupert's House, built in 1668, was the first Hudson's Bay Company fort built on Hudson or James Bays. Located at the mouth of Rupert's River, it was repeatedly fought over by both the French and the English during the years 1686-1713. Finally restored to the Hudson's Bay Company by the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, it remained an important link in the company's chain of posts.

A formal copy of the journal was entered in the company archives as the official post journal of the Rupert's House for that year.
