An Exceptional Rise

Whatever their backgrounds, most prime ministers come to the office with Cabinet experience. One notable rise to power was that of Lester Pearson, who joined the Cabinet in 1948 after a distinguished diplomatic career. Six years before becoming prime minister in 1963, he won the Nobel Peace Prize for his role, as secretary of state for External Affairs, in the Suez Crisis.
