A Handful of Warriors

Several prime ministers had military experience. John A. Macdonald "shouldered a musket" during the Rebellion of 1837. Later, Alexander Mackenzie, John Abbott, Mackenzie Bowell, and Wilfrid Laurier joined the militia at the time of the Fenian raids. In this century, both Lester Pearson and John Diefenbaker were veterans of the First World War.
