While leadership conventions can create disunity, they generally serve to revitalize the party and generate enormous publicity. The first convention to receive national radio coverage was the Conservative convention of 1927. Twenty-nine years later, the Conservatives held the first convention covered by television. Today, leadership conventions are major events for all media.
