Nation Building

Under John A. Macdonald's leadership, Canada expanded from four small provinces to extend from sea to sea to sea. Macdonald's National Policy also brought a tariff to protect Canadian industry and a transcontinental railway, in 1885. Wilfrid Laurier continued many of Macdonald's policies and also encouraged massive immigration, resulting in the creation, in 1905, of two new Western provinces.
