Economic and Social Policy
| Since 1867, Canada has changed from a country with a small farm economy and little social security, to an urban, post-industrial nation with a strong social safety net. During this time, prime ministers have dealt with numerous economic and social issues, including the Great Depression of the 1930s and the introduction of a variety of social programs. Free trade with the United States, which had been pursued in various forms by Wilfrid Laurier and other prime ministers, was finally realized with the signing of the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement in 1988. |
