Uneasy Neighbours

Although the United States is Canada's closest ally and largest trading partner, our neighbour's size and power have at times made us uneasy. Like the two countries, prime ministers and American presidents have had varying relationships. One of the closest was that between Mackenzie King and Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1935 to 1945. Lester Pearson and John F. Kennedy also proved to be good friends. Less congenial was the relationship between Ronald Reagan and Pierre Trudeau, who likened living with the United States to "sleeping with an elephant."
