The Printed Record

The first biography of a prime minister, Life and times of the Right Honourable Sir John A. Macdonald: Premier of the Dominion of Canada, by Joseph Edmund Collins, appeared in 1883. Since then, hundreds of books have been written about our national leaders, including scholarly studies, journalistic accounts and cartoon tributes. Whether favourable or critical, all of these works contribute to our understanding of prime ministers as private persons and as national icons.
