An adult forces Nathalie, who usually shares her secrets with her young friends, to keep a terrible secret. She is terrified by the idea of losing her parents’ love or going to prison if she reveals the truth. Her molester, a man who makes the floors creak at night and who comes to sleep beside her, has threatened Nathalie, telling her that this is what will happen is she tells anyone their "secret." Nathalie’s panic and torment are finally eased when her art teacher gains her confidence and gets her to "draw" her inner suffering. In La Petite fille qui ne souriait plus, author Gilles Tibo addresses the sensitive topic of the sexual abuse of children. The story is moving and offers hope to these victims of unscrupulous adults. Poetry is currently experiencing a resurgence in popularity, and adolescents are among those who appreciate its virtues. Fortunately for these young people, Henriette Major is contributing to this literary revival by sharing her love of words through this collection of poetry. The poems are grouped according to four themes: playing with words, describing emotions, praising nature, and celebrating the imaginary. J'aime les poèmes is filled with brightly coloured illustrations created using collage, crayon and watercolour techniques. With the exception of Tara, all the inhabitants of Bizarre Island are fat, hairy, and pimply and smell bad. Tara is tall and slim and has only one hair! The Bizarrians think she is ugly. The graduation ball is approaching, and no one has asked to be her date. Tara is unhappy. She decides to do something about it and goes to Dr. Schock’s beauty clinic. Tara will finally be like everyone else. Beauté monstre is a simple, funny and compelling story. The main character is well defined, and the black-and-white illustrations complement the text. This short story may help young people who are in similar situations, teaching them to like themselves as they are. It also humorously questions the centuries-old proverb that says, "You must suffer to be beautiful." AC
Peccadille, a young princess who lost her parents when she was little, sets off to find the castle she inherited. No one believes that Peccadille is a princess or that she owns a castle. With the encouragement of her parents, who are always with her in her mind, Peccadille is able to find the castle by following the sound of thunder. But she quickly realizes that the noise is not thunder: it is a giant snoring inside her castle. To release the castle giant, Peccadille has to prove to him that she really is a princess. This is a world where rats and cats talk to each other. Everything changed the day humans opened their doors to cats, who were able to ingratiate themselves. Sitting and purring on their masters’ shoulders, they learned how to read. They can now read street signs and move around at night without getting lost. The rats, however, still do not know how to read. Solitary creatures, they easily get lost in the evenings. Because of this, a rat named Gustave finds himself in a dangerous situation: he is captured by Attila and his gang of cats. The cats are laughing and having so much fun playing Scrabble that Gustave manages to escape with the help of Antoine, another rat who happens to be passing by. Antoine shows him a world in which cats and rats live in harmony. The two rats become friends, and Antoine, who can read, teaches Gustave to read and play Scrabble, too. Gustave even becomes a Scrabble champion. This highly imaginative book immerses us in the universe of cats and rats. This story tells us that just because the sun’s brilliance masks the moon, it doesn’t mean that the moon no longer exists. Will the wisdom of Octave the clown be enough to make the friendships she dreams of come true? Entre la lune et le soleil, with its abundant, beautiful illustrations that echo the imaginary world of children, encourages the reader to reflect on the bonds of friendship, which are both difficult to create and to keep.
