especially Nada and Maha, as a result of the war. At first he
feels responsible for their deaths but comes to terms with his
feelings after a stay in hospital. The story deals with the
issues of love, family, war, exile and ultimately hope in a
sensitive and realistic way. A beautiful book on the folly of

Caillou: la petite soeur

Caillou: le petit pot
Joceline Sanschagrin
Illustrations: Hélène Desputeaux
Pierrefonds, Quebec: Éditions Chouette, 1993
26 p. each ISBN 2921198436/2921198428
Ages 2 to 4.
In the first of these stories, Caillou has a new baby sister.
Feeling that everyone has forgotten him, Caillou starts to act
like a baby and ends up biting his sister. After his mother
tells him that apples are for biting, not babies, Caillou takes
out his frustrations on his doll. His mother tells Caillou that
he is big and strong and that the baby cannot do anything and
needs to be taken care of. Caillou begins to help. When she
loses her bottle, he brings it to her and she stops crying. He
rocks the baby and finds her funny, wiggly and sweet smelling.
Caillou decides that he's glad that he is big.
The second story revolves around Caillou's toilet training.
Caillou takes off his diaper and puts on his underpants. Now he
can run fast! After several false starts, Caillou finally gets
the hang of it. He is so proud of his accomplishment that it
takes some coaxing from his father before he is willing to flush
the toilet. He goes to bed that night and wakes himself up in
time to visit his potty. He is trained!
These sturdy cardboard books have brightly coloured illustrations
in Desputeaux's appealing style. Readers who are familiar with
her other books about Caillou will remember some of the toys and
clothes that we find in these stories. Here is an artist who
knows and loves children.
