The website A Virtual Schoolhouse offers a glimpse into the rise of public education in Canada. Featuring photographs and educational materials from the collection of Library and Archives Canada (LAC), this exhibition allows Canadians of all ages to explore the early days of school. In addition, visitors can experience what school life was like through an interactive environment entitled "Travel Back in Time."
LAC extends a special thanks to Dr. Charles Levi for his research on education in Canada, and to Dr. Micheline Dumont for her invaluable assistance on the topic of education in Quebec.
As well, the contributions of many LAC staff were instrumental in the success of this project, and their efforts are much appreciated.
We also gratefully acknowledge the contribution of the Department of Canadian Heritage, whose financial assistance through the Canadian Culture Online Program made this work possible.
