Braided Mat

Acadian women made simple rugs made of rags called breillons. One of the more simple types of rugs to make was the braided mat, or tapis à tresses.

Materials

  • rags (fabric remnants) of various colours
  • ruler
  • scissors
  • straight pins
  • needle and thread

Instructions

Materials needed for braided mat   Step 1. Cut cloth into strips 2 inches wide.

Step 2. Fold each side of your strip so that the long edges meet in the center. Fold the strip in half as shown. You can use straight pins to hold the folds in place.   Step 3. Sew three strips together at the ends. Repeat this step to make as many strips as you want.

Step 4. Braid the strips.   Step 5. Take one of your braided strips and begin to wind it, sewing it in place as you go.

Step 6. When you come to the end of your first strip, add another strip by sewing it to the first strip on the underside of your mat to hide the join. Continue winding and sewing your braids until the mat is the size you want. You can make a round, oval or square mat.   Finished mat
