Doukhobor women embroidered lovely floral designs on kerchiefs, called a platok. They also embroidered aprons, pillowcases or placemats.

Printable design for the Doukhobor embroidered handkerchief

• printout of design (or make up your own design)
• lightweight fabric (about 12 inches square)
• embroidery silks
• scissors
• pencil
• needle
• thread

Materials needed for embroidered handkerchief		Step 1. You will need to transfer your design to the fabric square. To do this, take your printed design, turn it face down and colour on the back of the design with a pencil.

Step 2. Turn the design face up and place it onto the fabric square where you want the design to be. The pencil marks will need to be touching the fabric. Trace over the design with a sharp pencil. Press hard.		Step 3. The design should now be on your fabric. Touch it up if you need to.

Step 4. Embroider your design with the colours of your choice.		Step 5. Your handkerchief is complete. You can give it a more finished look if you hem around the four sides by folding over each edge twice and sewing it in place. You could fold the square into a triangle to make it into a kerchief for a doll!
