Métis-inspired Sash Bracelet

The Métis wore a striped finger-woven sash of various colours of wools. It was traditionally tied around the waist to hold a coat closed. Women now sometimes wear the sash over their shoulder. The Manitoba Métis Federation adopted a new sash with symbolic colours.

Materials

• coloured wool (as many different colours as you like)
• scissors
• needle
• thread

Materials needed for sash bracelet		Step 1. Cut three strands of wool of each colour, around 24 inches long. (If you use three different colours, for example, you will have nine strands of wool all together). Take three strands of the same colour and tie them with a knot, leaving about 1 inch of fringe at the top. Do the same for each of the other colours.

Step 2. Braid each group of three strands. When the braid is long enough to slip over your wrist, tie the braid off with a knot. Trim the excess wool, leaving enough to make a fringe (about 1 inch).		Step 3. Sew each of the braids together, one by one.

Step 4. Trim the fringe so that it's all one length.		Step 5. Sew the two ends of the bracelet together.You now have a bracelet that resembles a miniature Métis sash.
