HistoryReturning HomeSome Acadians returned after the Seven Years' War (1756-1763) ended. They had been farmers before but the lands they had once owned had been taken over by others and so most Acadians became fishermen. The Acadians had large families and their population grew faster than the English population. Today, although some Acadians no longer speak French, approximately 20% of the Maritime population is made up of Acadians and French-speaking people. It took time and lots of hard work, but the Acadians are now a recognized people. They speak a variety of French that is different from French spoken in Quebec and France, and have a culture that is all their own. |
